Designing a fertilizer label for the Canadian market means meeting a specific set of CFIA requirements. Use this checklist as a starting point before your next label project.
1. Guaranteed Analysis
Every fertilizer label must clearly state the guaranteed minimum percentages of nutrients (N-P-K and any secondary/micronutrients). This must be accurate, legible, and prominently placed.
2. Product Name and Registration Number
The registered product name and CFIA registration number must appear on the label exactly as approved.
3. Net Contents
Net weight or volume must be declared in metric units, and often imperial as well, depending on the product category.
4. Directions for Use
Clear application rates and instructions are required so users apply the product safely and effectively.
5. Precautionary Statements
Any hazard or precautionary statements required by the Fertilizers Act and its regulations must be included, using approved wording.
6. Bilingual Labelling
Canadian labels generally require both English and French text for all mandatory information, this affects layout and design significantly.
7. Manufacturer or Registrant Information
The name and address of the registrant or manufacturer must be clearly listed.
Designing Around These Requirements
The challenge is fitting all of this mandatory information into a label that still looks premium and shelf-ready. This is exactly the kind of work we do at Ag Made, working alongside Agro Certify to make sure every requirement is met without sacrificing design quality.
